Biography

Born in La Spezia, Cavallini moved to Fiesole with his family in 1960 and began his artistic career as a self-taught artist. His life was dedicated to sculpture and the search for movement. He has been commissioned many works by various organisations in Italy and abroad. One of his important works, Monumento alla vita (Monument to life), is exhibited in Strasbourg in the Council of Europe Hall. One of his first works in stone, Portrait of statesman Konrad Adenauer, is on display in Germany, in the Government Palace in Bonn.
In Italy, Cavallini created the Monumento a Colombo (Columbus Monument) for Expo '92, commissioned by the City of Genoa and installed in the Ligurian capital. For the city of Florence, Cavallini created numerous works now located on the Lungarno, Villa Favard and at the Rai Tv headquarters, where the Volo di Gabbiani (Flight of Seagulls) is located. In 1982, the Region of Tuscany sponsored the bronze transformation of the Monumento alla Pace (Peace Monument), located at the Palazzo dei Congressi.
In 1996, the sculptural group Fontana della Maternità (Fountain of Motherhood), made up of five large bronzes arranged in a semicircle, was placed in Piazza Ferrucci by the City of Florence on the occasion of the European Summit in June 1996.
In 1998, he wrote and published the volume of poems "Cantici del mare e della vita" (Edizioni Polistampa-Fi).
In 2000, the Italian community of the Principality of Monaco commissioned him to create a monument to mark the 50th year of the regency of Prince Rainier III. The sculpture Fraternità (Fraternity) was then placed in front of the new Montecarlo railway station and inaugurated by Prince Rainier III and his son Albert. The event was presided over as representative of the Italian State by the former President of the Republic, Francesco Cossiga.
In December 2000 he took part in an exhibition sponsored by the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic called "Europe: Culture and Freedom" where he exhibited in Forte dei Marmi (Lu) the bronze of the Monumento alla Vita created ten years earlier for the European Parliament building in Strasbourg.
In 2010 he participated in collaboration with the architect Ron Arad and the French fashion house Notify in a project involving his Monumento alla Pace at the Palazzo degli Affari in Florence on the occasion of "Pitti Immagine Uomo".
This will be the last official appearance of the artist, who physically tried will retire in the last years of his life in his studio in Fiesole (Fi) trying to complete his biography as a testimony of an intense working life.
Sauro Cavallini died due to heart problems in his studio on 27 July 2016.
