The Ruptura art movement and the departure from the Mexican school of painting

The 8th Florence Biennale awarded the prestigious "Lorenzo il Magnifico" Lifetime Achievement Award to José Luis Cuevas, one of the greatest Mexican artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, a rebel and a leader with a great capacity for critical dialogue. He is one of the most important members of the Ruptura art movement, known for its radical detachment from Mexican muralism and its critical stance towards the Mexican school of painting.

Internationally recognised for his exceptional aesthetic qualities, with the Ruptura movement he has breathed new life into contemporary Mexican art.
His works are characterised by an ideal of artistic freedom, an aesthetic quality that promotes expression and figurative art capable of reflecting the human condition, past and present.
