The eight edition of the Florence Biennale presented the Award “Lorenzo il Magnifico” for Lifetime Achievement to Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, in recognition her thirty years of dedication to various areas of work as a designer: fashion, fragrances, eyewear, decorations, theatre sets and costumes, murals, and urban spaces.
At the Fortezza da Basso an exhibit celebrated her career by showcasing 40 of her fashion designs, all of them chosen especially for this occasion.
The dance company MaggioDanza also performed a contemporary dance piece in her honour. On this occasion the company’s prima ballerina Sabrina Vitangeli wore a costume that de la Prada had designed especially for her.
To describe Agatha Ruiz de la Prada simply as a fashion designer is truly too reductive. At the VIII Florence Biennale she symbolized the encounter between the artificial and the natural, the avant-garde and the classical. Her creations have rendered fashion one of the highest forms of art.
