Patricia Urquiola receives the International ‘Leonardo da Vinci’ Lifetime Achievement Award (for Design) from the Florence Biennale
At the 15th Florence Biennale, a day dedicated to design with Patricia Urquiola as the guest of honour, who will receive the International “Leonardo da Vinci” Lifetime Achievement Award (Design)
World-renowned designer and architect Patricia Urquiola has been awarded the International ‘Leonardo da Vinci’ Lifetime Achievement Award (for Design) by the Florence Biennale at the Fortezza da Basso in Florence the 23 October 2025, during an official ceremony attended by the artist herself, the public and the national and international press.
A central figure in the contemporary design scene, Urquiola is currently Art Director at Cassina, a historic Italian design excellence company, and her works are characterised by soft shapes, sensory materials and a strong focus on sustainability.
The decision by the Biennale Executive Committee, together with the Curatorial Committee and the International Jury, is motivated by the following words: "For her constant research, courageous experimentation and extraordinary talent in designing spaces, objects and production processes designed to improve people's lives and created with respect for nature; our recognition goes to an architect and designer who has been able to gather and develop the heritage of her mentor Achille Castiglioni, projecting design and architecture towards new horizons that go beyond the limits of what has been previously experimented with and represent an admirable example of hybridisation and unification of opposites."
When receiving the award, Patricia Urquiola commented: "It was a surprise in a very fortunate year. The name of this award has a special meaning. Leonardo da Vinci represents the union between art, science and invention, which I have always considered to be at the heart of design. Receiving an award that bears his name is like receiving an invitation to continue experimenting, to observe the world with curious eyes and to build connections between disciplines, emotions and people.”
