Luciano Caruso's human and artistic story unfolds between two cities: Naples, where he spent his youthful years, and Florence, where he moved in 1976.
The cultural fervour of the Neapolitan environment in the 1960s favoured Luciano's first literary and artistic experiences even before he completed his university studies in Medieval Aesthetics. He frequented the painters of Group 58, in particular Mario Colucci, who brought him into contact with the artistic reality in Milan (Enrico Baj, Sergio Dangelo and Piero Manzoni) and Paris, from the ‘Lettrists’ to François Dufrêne to the ‘Situationists’. The suggestions of Paris influenced Luciano's work - starting with the use of the analogical procedure of surrealist ancestry and the new positivity of the ‘letter’ freed from the word.
Thanks to his encounters with other authors, in particular the poet Stelio Maria Martini (with whom he founded the Continuum Group in 1967), Caruso refined his aesthetic research, aimed at overcoming the expressive insufficiency of poetry as a mere verbal language through its enrichment with the visual and material element of writing.
Caruso's first book-work dates from 1965. From il gesto poetico (Naples, 1968) onwards, essays and other writings intertwine with the more properly artistic work of this author who, in Italy and abroad, took part in exhibitions dedicated to New Writing, Visual Poetry and the Artist's Book.
In 1980, he launched the international sound poetry festival Il colpo di Glottide. Luciano Caruso's latest works, including La vita della seta, Atlante, and Periplo, reaffirm his way of understanding life and art as a journey made up of passages between the past and the future.
