"Light and Shadow Workshops"by Laura Izzi, in collaboration with Chiara Nannini and Lara Negri

Educational project at the XV Florence Biennale | 4 sessions on 19 e 26 October: 10:30 / 12:00 / 16:00 / 17:00

On the occasion of the 2025 Florence Biennale, themed “The Sublime Essence of Light and Darkness. Concepts of Dualism and Unity in Contemporary Art and Design”, we are glad to present an educational project for children that combines contemporary art, play, and scientific exploration. These workshops create an experiential path where light and shadow become both creative and cognitive tools. Through stories, guided questions, play, and hands-on activities, children investigate physical phenomena while cultivating imagination and artistic expression.

Main activities include:

  • Sensory exploration with light sources, mirrors, and interactive objects;
  • Guiding questions to observe and hypothesize about light’s behaviour;
  • “Flowers of light”, reflections created with mirrors of different shapes;
  • Luminous constructions with recycled materials to design ephemeral landscapes;
  • Exploring darkness, using silhouettes and shadows to transform the absence of light into play.

The ateliers, permanently equipped with lights and interactive objects, allow children to experiment autonomously and continuously. The methodology is based on an immersive and participatory approach, where children are active protagonists and contemporary art becomes fertile ground for creativity. Light, used as an artistic medium, transforms space while fostering self-confidence, collaboration, and expressive skills. A unique experience that introduces children to art and science, merging wonder, play, and discovery.
