THE FLORENCE PROJECT

Puebla, Mexico November/December 2018

The Florence Project stemmed from an idea of Karen J. Sander, a Colombian/US artist who participated in the XI Florence Biennale.

Karen is the ‘mind’ behind the conformation of the group of 25 artists from Latin America, brought together in October 2017 during the XI Florence Biennale. We asked her to describe the project they are working on: here is what she told us!

‘During those days at the Florence Biennale, a very strong bond of friendship was born that has united the group to this day. During these months, we have supported each other in our individual careers and formulated the idea of doing group exhibitions in different countries around the world. Our next project is planned in Spain in 2019. In the months following the exhibition, Karen, a Biennial participant of Mexican origin, Norma Cortés Caballero, and the Biennial's Mexican judge, Mati Roca, helped us to contact the owner of the Mizrahi Cultural Centre, Edgar Mizrahi, to present him with the idea of an exhibition of this group. Mizrahi was immediately enthusiastic about holding a group exhibition in the city of Puebla (Mexico) with a group of artists from the Florence Biennale! So the project was started, which was named ‘The Florence Project’, consisting only of participants from the Florence Biennale. The Florence Project is, in fact, made up of 16 artists from Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Spain, and is characterised by the variety of forms of expression developed by its members, which undoubtedly adds cultural richness to this particular group, united by art and friendship, developed during the 11th Florence Biennale. ’

The exhibition will be presented in Puebla, Mexico, at:

Galería Barrio del Artista, 9 November to 22 November 2018
Centro Cultural Libanes, Vernissage 10 November / exhibition from 12 to 18 November 2018
ArtFest, 30 November to 2 December 2018
