The death of the Master Franco Zeffirelli

Franco Zeffirelli died on the 15th of June 2019, in his home in Via Appia – Rome. He was 96 years old. He was born in Florence on the 12th of February 1923.

Franco Zeffirelli started his career first as a student at the Academy of Fine Arts and then at the University of Florence – Faculty of Architecture. In 1946 he moved to Rome where he made his debut as a film and theater actor, and where he had the meeting that changed his life with Luchino Visconti.

Thus he began an artistic career that went on for about 60 years: nowadays Franco Zeffirelli  is one of the most famous italian artist in the world, able to pass easily from cinema to theater, to TV. He received countless awards, including five David di Donatello awards, two Nastri d’Argento and as many as 14 nominations for his movies at the Oscars.

In 2008, Franco Zeffirelli expressed his willingness to leave his entire archive to the city of Florence, “collected for my opera, theater and cinema performances over sixty years”. Almost ten years after that declaration, on 1 October 2017 the Center for Performing Arts – Fondazione Franco Zeffirelli onlus opened in Florence, hosted in the monumental complex of San Firenze, formerly the seat of the Court.

On Tuesday 18 at 11.00 am the funeral cerimony will be held in the Duomo, officiated by the Archbishop of Florence, Cardinal Giuseppe Betori. The last greeting to the Master will see the participation of the Musical Chapel of the Cathedral of Florence directed by Michele Manganelli. The Master will rest in the family chapel of the Florentine cemetery of the Porte Sante, in San Miniato al Monte.
