SlowTile by Made in Sipario: A Change of Perspective
Special Project at the XV Florence Biennale
The creativity of the Special Artists of the Social Cooperative Made in Sipario Onlus meets the artisan tradition of hand- pressed terracotta tile making.
SlowTile was born in 2018 from the collaboration between Made in Sipario Onlus and architect Leone Pecchioli, who guides the Special Artists (young men and women with intellectual disabilities and special needs) along a path of artistic craftsmanship. Together, they create hand-pressed Tuscan terracotta tiles, glazed on every side, with the aim of producing unique collections unlike any other.
What makes SlowTile distinctive is that each piece is individually dipped into liquid glaze before being decorated or finished by the Special Artists of Made in Sipario.
The Cooperative functions as a true workshop of artistic craftsmanship, where Special Artists learn a trade alongside skilled professionals. It is an ideal place where people with disabilities can be trained, develop artistic and decorative skills, and express their creativity – always with the individual at the centre, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to realise their potential and participate actively in working life.
This unique approach was recognised two years ago by IKEA, which chose SlowTile for its Sesto Fiorentino store. The tiles were used to enrich a display in the Bathroom Furnishings section, an example of corporate social responsibility that gained international appreciation.
More recently, in summer, under the supervision and guidance of architect Leone Pecchioli, the Special Artists created hand- glazed ceramic tiles for the polychrome cladding of the Liberty- style dome of Bagno Bertuccelli on the Viareggio promenade. An increasing number of businesses and organisations in the sector are discovering and appreciating SlowTile by Made in Sipario – a project that values and recognises the work of integration carried out by our Special Artists, who have been active in Florence and beyond for over 14 years.
