Sauro Cavallini’s "Ballerina" in Dubai anticipates Expo 2020

Waiting for Expo 2020 in Dubai that will be inaugurated next October, the financial district of the capital of the Arab Emirates - one of the most important in the world - is already the scene of an extraordinary artistic event that is the forerunner and corollary to the autumn appointment.

Thanks to the collaboration between 71StructuralArt in Dubai and Galleria Frilli in Florence, the DIFC (Dubai International Financial Center) has created a unique project in the Arab metropolis - the "DIFC Sculpture Walk" - the setting up of a suggestive selection of monumental works by artists of international importance which will be on display until late spring 2020.

In the small number of artists protagonists of this exclusive and unrepeatable full immersion in art, also figure Sauro Cavallini, born in La Spezia but Florence adopted, who died three years ago after a successful career lasting half a century.

For a few months the monumental Ballerina (over three meters high) - which Cavallini made in bronze in 1979 dedicating her to dance -, will be at the center of Dubai’s Gate Avenue, to represent Italian excellence in contemporary sculptural art.

The DIFC Sculpture Walk, where the work of Sauro Cavallini is located, introduces an extensive program of events that will make Dubai Expo 2020 one of the main world attractions this year. In particular, the organizers of the "Sculpture Walk" expect that this extraordinary temporary exhibition of large sculptures not musealized will attract a large public, including collectors, local and international art lovers, in addition to the financial institutions already operating in this crucial economic district. It will therefore be an experience that will put in original dialogue the beauty of sculptural art with the progressive design solutions of the Arabic Avenue.

Artist profile

Active for over half a century, Sauro Cavallini has always shown an eclectic personality, dealing with different forms of expression (drawing, painting, but especially sculpture) and managing to get prestigious commissions, as well as the privilege of being present with his works in collections of high thickness such as those of the Vatican City, the Principality of Monaco, the European Parliament of Strasbourg or important banking institutions and public administrations.

Many awards received by Sauro Cavallini alive, but since his death in 2016, there has been an increasing recognition and appreciation of his work through the particular attention of critics and a series of events that have given the opportunity to an increasingly wide audience to deepen his work.

Thanks to the opening of his atelier on the hill of Fiesole (FI) on the occasion of the inauguration of the Study Center named after him in January 2017 in the presence of the press, the President of the Regional Council of Tuscany Eugenio Giani and the Mayor Anna Ravoni, the awarding of the "Lorenzo il Magnifico" International Lifetime Achievement Award during the XI Florence Biennale, held in October 2017, and then to the great retrospective inaugurated by the Mayor of Florence Dario Nardella that the Academy of Arts and Design in Florence dedicated to him in 2018. then continues the success of an artist who has dedicated his entire life to the realization of works of great emotional impact, where the relevance of the study of form both from the sculptural point of view, both graphic, has reached very high levels of deepening and knowledge.
