Biography of the artist

Born in 1943 in Bruzzano Zeffirio, inland on the Ionian coast of Calabria, Pasquale Celona graduated in biology in 1971.

He combined his scientific studies with a passion for painting and in 1975 made his debut at the 2nd International Painting Exhibition of the City of Milan, held at Castello Sforzesco.

In 1976 he took part in several group exhibitions and presented his first solo exhibition at the Galleria alla Fonte in Piano Arta Terme. In the same year, while inaugurating his personal exhibition at the historic Hotel Roma in Tolmezzo (Udine), he experienced the earthquake in Friuli, the memory of which he transferred onto the canvas of Earthquake in Gemona. The same year, he concluded with a personal exhibition at the Galleria il Torchio in Modena.

In 1978 he was awarded the ‘Leone d'oro’ prize by the Circolo della Stampa in Florence.

In the 1980s and 1990s he took part in several international exhibitions and had solo shows in Prato, at Galleria la Spirale (1980) and Galleria il Pergamo (1981); in Milan, at Galleria Artespiga (1983); and in Florence, at Casa di Dante (1982) and the French Cultural Institute (1992).

For Pasquale Celona, the 1990s represented a period of intensive creativity and artistic production, destined to gain acclaim from a vast public of collectors and art enthusiasts following Paolo Levi's presentation in his 1996 monograph and, in the same year, in a television programme broadcast by Telemarket.

Nevertheless, he intertwined his personal artistic research with the organisation of the Italian Contemporary Art Fair.

In 1997, together with his brother Piero, he founded the Florence Biennale, of which he is President.

On 27 April 2006, the Museu de Arte do Parlamento de São Paulo, Brazil, acquired a Still Life by Pasquale Celona at the initiative of the Ministerio da Cultura do Estado de São Paulo, Emanuel von Lauestein Massarani, with the approval of the AssembleIa Legislativa do Estado de São Paulo.

In recent years, he has been able to devote himself more freely to his art and to exhibition projects in prestigious venues, starting with the Yacht Club de Monaco, where he has a series of new works in October 2014, the month dedicated to Italian culture.

In 2015, in Pietrasanta, at the Sala delle Grasce of the ‘Luigi Russo’ Cultural Centre, he debuted with his solo exhibition ‘Pitture di Luce’.

In 2017, he represented Italy in the ‘G7 d'Arte’, a group exhibition at the Sacrario della Basilica di Santa Croce, Florence, in conjunction with the first G7 of Culture.
