A mastaba in Hyde Park. Christo's project for London

7,506 barrels of oil arranged on a platform of plastic cubes will float in the Serpentine Lake in London's Hyde Park. This is the latest project by Christo, Career Prize winner of the V Florence Biennale 2005, and it will be inaugurated on 20 June, two years after ‘The Floating Piers’ at Lake Iseo. So a few days after the closure of Brafa Art Fair, where the Bulgarian artist was guest of honour, his next ‘effort’ was approved by the Westminster City Council. The new structure is inspired by the ‘mastabas’, monumental tumulus tombs of ancient Egypt. It will be some 20 metres high and weigh 500 tonnes. The dominant colours will be white, red and blue, as a reference to the British flag. The inauguration of the installation will coincide with the opening of the exhibition dedicated to him and his wife (who died in 2009) at the Serpentine Gallery.
