Marina Abramović returns to Florence with The Cleaner

From 21 September 2018 to 20 January 2019, Palazzo Strozzi is hosting a major exhibition dedicated to Marina Abramović, one of the most famous and controversial figures in contemporary art, whose works have revolutionised the idea of performance by challenging her body, its limits and its potential for expression.

The event stands as an extraordinary retrospective that will bring together over 100 works offering an overview of the most famous works of her career, from the 1970s to the 2000s, through videos, photographs, paintings, objects, installations and the live re-enactment of her famous performances by a group of performers specifically trained and selected for the exhibition.

The exhibition stems from a direct collaboration with the artist in the desire to continue - after Ai Weiwei and Bill Viola - the series of exhibitions that have brought major representatives of contemporary art to Palazzo Strozzi. The palazzo will once again be used as a unified exhibition venue, allowing Marina Abramović to confront herself for the first time with a Renaissance architecture and in which the close relationship she has had and continues to have with Italy will be emphasised.

On Saturday 22 September at 3.30 pm, the artist will be the protagonist of the special Marina Abramović Speaks event organised by the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. In conversation with Arturo Galansino, curator of the exhibition and general director of the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, the artist will address some of the themes of her existential and creative journey, retracing the stages of her career from her beginnings in Serbia to her latest major performances around the world.

The exhibition is organised by Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, produced by Moderna Museet, Stockholm in collaboration with Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk and Bundeskunsthalle, Bonn.

Curated by Arturo Galansino, Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, Lena Essling, Moderna Museet, with Tine Colstrup, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, and Susanne Kleine, Bundeskunsthalle Bonn.
