Farewell to Italian Artist Amalia Del Ponte (1936-2025)

We extend our heartfelt farewell to Amalia Del Ponte (1936–2025), a distinguished Italian visual artist and designer, born in Milan and who passed away on August 16. The Florence Biennale had the honour of welcoming her at the 2023 edition, where she presented the project You Are Me and received the “Lorenzo il Magnifico” Lifetime Achievement Award from the President.

“An artist who infused matter with thought, transforming sculpture and space into sensory experiences — a dialogue between art, science, sound, and light. Milan and the art world have lost a voice capable of giving form to the invisible, one that will continue to inspire us.” With these words, the Amalia Del Ponte Archive announced her passing.

A pupil of Marino Marini at the Brera Academy (1956–1961), Del Ponte developed an independent, rigorous, and visionary body of work focused on emptiness, light, and the structure of matter. In the 1960s, she collaborated with Elio Fiorucci, designing his first flagship store in Milan’s Galleria Passarella, which was destined to revolutionise the shopping experience. She became internationally recognised in 1973, when Bruno Munari and Umberto Apollonio invited her to exhibit at the São Paulo Biennial, one of the most prestigious art events of the time. Since then, she has participated in major events, including the XV Triennale di Milano and several editions of the Venice Biennale, and held more than twenty solo exhibitions. Among the most recent were those at the Museo del Novecento (2017) and Fabbrica del Vapore (2022), which reaffirmed the contemporary resonance of her artistic language.

Her loss leaves an irreplaceable void in the art world and deep sorrow in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her. With affection, we extend our condolences to her family, to the Archive that preserves and promotes her work, and to all her loved ones. Farewell, Amalia.
