Tim Burton wins Florence Biennale's "Lorenzo il Magnifico" International Lifetime Achievement Award
21 October—An entire day dedicated to Tim Burton with the Award Ceremony attended by the artist himself
This afternoon (October 21, 2026), at the Fortezza da Basso in Florence, the American director and artist Tim Burton was honoured with the prestigious "Lorenzo il Magnifico" International Lifetime Achievement Award by the Florence Biennale, during an official ceremony in the presence of the artist himself, the public, and the national and international press.
This award recognises Burton's outstanding achievements in the contemporary art scene, not only in film but also in illustration, graphic design and stop-motion animation.
The curatorial board's motivations were outlined by the event's General Director, Jacopo Celona, who stated: "The award is the Florence Biennale's recognition of one of the most important artists of our time for his extraordinary artistic work, which embraces drawing, graphic design, stop-motion animation and fil production. Through his works, Tim Burton has revolutionised the view that darkness is synonymous with evil, bringing to light new concepts of beauty through magical and poetic visions, breaking down stereotypes linked to dualisms, and advancing a deep understanding of human nature and the connections between our limited and fragile earthly world and the immensity of the universe: a new immaterial, spiritual and transcendental perspective, capable of bringing emotional awareness of the infinite, which shapes his works as an artistic expression of absolute extraordinary nature and as a lasting cultural legacy for both the artistic world and the general public."
On receiving the award, Tim Burton stated: "My work is mainly focused on film, so when I was told I'd been chosen to receive this award, I was pleasantly surprised. I'm thrilled because this award goes beyond the world of cinema, and being recognised as an artist is something truly special to me."
Until Sunday 26 October, the public has the opportunity to visit the unprecedented solo exhibition "Tim Burton: Light and Darkness", curated by the artist himself in collaboration with the Florence Biennale. The exhibition follows the theme of this edition, "The Sublime Essence of Light and Darkness — Concepts of Dualism and Unity in Contemporary Art and Design", exploring with cohesion and originality the dualism between light and shadow, the visible and the invisible, reality and imagination — key concepts of Burton's aesthetic.
