Lifetime Achievement Award in memoriam to artist Sauro Cavallini

The Florence Biennale, on the occasion of the 11th edition that will take place from 6 to 15 October 2017 in the historic spaces of the Fortezza da Basso in Florence, honours the memory of sculptor Sauro Cavallini, who passed away on 28 July 2016, by conferring the ‘Lorenzo il Magnifico Lifetime Achievement Award’ with the following motivation: ‘The special ‘Lorenzo il Magnifico’ Prize to the memory is honoured to Sauro Cavallini for having masterfully infused, through the art of sculpture, life to form, conferring levity and movement to the bronze of original as well as harmonious figures that are the expression of an extraordinary creative flair’.

The Artworks of Cavallini in Europe and in Italy

Sauro Cavallini's best-known work is the Monumento alla Vita, whose over 3-metre high bronze can be admired in Strasbourg in front of the Council of Europe building, while the scale model was donated to Pope Wojtyla during an official ceremony in 1992.

Also impressive are two bronze monuments of about 3 metres in height belonging to the private collection of the Principality of Monaco, namely the Passo a Due that can be admired since the early 1990s in the garden dedicated to Grace Kelly in the Fointville district and the sculpture Fraternity that has stood since 2000 in front of the Principality's railway station inaugurated by Prince Rainier III, his son Albert and the Senator for Life (and former President of the Italian Republic), Francesco Cossiga.

Not to mention that in 1963 his sculpture Portrait of Konrad Adenauer was placed in the Government Palace in Bonn.

In Italy, his large bronze sculptures can be seen in various cities. In Genoa, we find the 8-metre-high Columbus Monument, created for the Expo and dedicated to the anniversary of the discovery of America; in Diano Marina, in the province of Imperia, the Monument to the Fallen of the Second World War (approximately 2.5 metres high) is located.

In Florence, his monumental works can be admired in numerous public places. In the garden of Piazza Ferrucci (the group of five sculptures entitled Fountain of Motherhood), at the RAI TV headquarters in Tuscany (Flight of Seagulls), at the Palazzo degli Affari in Piazza Adua (Monument to Peace), at Villa Favard (Icarus) and at the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte (Crucifixion).

Countless are the presences of his works in private collections and credit institutions, among which we mention only a few: il Cavallo Morente, La Ballerina, Passo a due, Ballerini, la Natura, l’Estensione e una Figura frontale.

In the park of his studio on the Fiesole hill, several large sculptures can also be admired, including a monumental David (4 metres high), next to which the artist himself wanted to be portrayed, and the complete series of dance steps.
