On the occasion of the Investec Cape Town Art fair, in Cape Town, South Africa, El Anatsui, winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 11th Florence Biennale 2017, will open a solo exhibition at the Iziko South African National Gallery.
Meyina is the first solo exhibition of El Anatsui, one of the most influential contemporary artists working in South Africa today. Over the past forty years, Anatsui has created a body of work that has expanded the language of contemporary sculpture in Africa internationally. Consisting of thousands of crumpled pieces of metal bound together with copper wires, the exhibition will present the public with the artist's recent large-scale sculptural installations, along with intricate tapestries. The works narrate and comment on African history, post-colonial conditions, and the everyday realities and experiences of the continent. Archival objects, exhibition plans, letters and other documents will also be on display, offering a rare glimpse into the artist's creative process. This exhibition is presented by Iziko Museums of South Africa, in collaboration with the Goodman Gallery and the Friends of the South African National Gallery, curated by Bisi Silva.
