From Kabul to Florence: Shamsia Hassani, female street art
In connection with the 11th edition of the ‘Florence Biennale - International Exhibition of Contemporary Art’ and in anticipation of the ‘European Day of Justice’, Shamsia Hassani (Tehran, 1988) - the first and only female street artist working in the difficult context of the city of Kabul, Afghanistan - created a graffito on the external wall of the ITI Leonardo da Vinci kindly made available by the Municipality of Florence and District 5. The presentation of the work took place during the press conference on Tuesday 24 October at ITI Leonardo da Vinci, via del Terzolle 93, Florence. Speakers at the conference included Andrea Vannucci Councillor for Sport, Popular Traditions, Youth Policies and Toponymy of the Municipality of Florence, Sara Funaro Councillor for Welfare and Health, Hospitality and Integration, Equal Opportunities, and Housing of the Municipality of Florence, Maurizio Barbarisi Vice-President of the Court of Appeal of Florence, Jacopo Celona General Director of the Florence Biennale, and the artist Shamsia Hassani.
In addition, on the occasion of the European Day of Justice (Wednesday 25 October), organised by the Florence Court of Appeal with the endorsement of President Margherita Cassano and the coordination of Deputy President Maurizio Barbarisi, the Florence Biennale is promoting the ‘Kabul Art Project in Florence’. The young students of Florentine high schools attending the European Day of Justice will have the opportunity to meet the artist whose presence represents for them, concretely, an international artistic experience that is a direct expression of the need to reaffirm the values of justice and equality.
A photographic exhibition will be set up in the spaces of the Palace of Justice in Florence with works from the series ‘Dreaming Graffiti’ and ‘Bird of no nation’.
