The (a)Mend - La (r)Ammenda is a performance that explores the theme of the XV Florence Biennale. Light has always been a metaphor for the divine, goodness, and life. It is often contrasted with darkness, which has been perceived as a symbol of evil, the unknown, and death. However, as we know, light cannot be perceived without darkness itself, forming an archetypal dualism. This performance therefore seeks to highlight the necessity of embracing all aspects of the human conditions through the representation of the Fallen Angel. It can thus be seen as an act of acceptance and a process of healing from the past, the trauma and the pain, in a difficult and long journey but filled with love, vulnerability and gentleness towards ourselves and the hidden aspects of our being that we often struggle to fully accept.

Women in Dance (WID) is a global initiative dedicated to amplifying the voices of women-identifying and gender-diverse artists through performance, scholarship, leadership, and film.

The Women in Dance International Film Festival, launched in 2021, extends this mission into the cinematic realm. Each year, the festival curates an inspiring selection of short dance films created by women and gender-diverse choreographers and filmmakers. These works explore themes of identity, resilience, social justice, and creative innovation, showcasing the power of movement as a form of storytelling. To date, the festival has received over 600 submissions from more than 35 countries, establishing itself as a vital global showcase of choreographic and cinematic excellence.

Strange Place is a contemporary experimental performance that invites viewers to see reality from a new perspective—one shaped by an unfamiliar space where the reality and fiction intersect. Drawing inspiration from everyday life, as well as from theatrical and imaginative elements, the performance seeks to spark new experiences and reflections. By blending physical movement with installation art, it creates a dialogue between the tangible world and the audience's inner imagination. Through this immersive experience, viewers are encouraged to question and rediscover their own identities and values.

This educational workshop is built on an immersive and interactive methodology, where children take an active role in their own learning process. Through the fusion of art and play, they are encouraged to express emotions and thoughts in a spontaneous and creative way.  Contemporary art—with its diverse languages and expressive tools—offers a rich ground for exploring self-expression and the relationship between the individual and their environment. At the heart of the workshop is the use of artificial light as a means to define space and create imagined scenarios. Within this context, children become “explorers of the imagination,” transforming their surroundings through light and materials, while building confidence in themselves and their creative abilities.

Gabriel Isak is a fine art photographer from Sweden. As part of the XV Florence Biennale, Isak will exhibit his photographs as one of the Guests of Honour and receive the “Lorenzo il Magnifico” President’s Award. He creates images inspired by human psychology, dreams, the unconscious mind, and his own experiences. Within his minimalist compositions, Isak shows a nuanced sensitivity to the dualism between colour and the human psyche. Through his visual iconographies rich in symbolism and emotion, Isak aims to illuminate mental health and experiences that people dealt with daily.  

Isak’s 2020 photograph Under the Moon was selected as the key visual for this edition’s official poster and coordinated communication materials, appearing in various public spaces across Italy.

TALK invites audiences into an evocative narrative where dance and artificial intelligence merge seamlessly, weaving a compelling tale of interaction and exploration. Set within a fluid, ever-changing sonic environment, the performance unfolds as a dialogue between human dancers and an AI-driven soundscape.

Each movement the dancers perform becomes both response and provocation, engaging intimately with the unpredictable rhythms and textures generated in real-time by advanced technology. As bodies and algorithms converse, a poetic story emerges about the negotiation of control, spontaneity, and the delicate balance between human intuition and technological creativity. TALK not only redefines the boundaries of traditional choreography but also offers a profound meditation on our contemporary relationship with technology—highlighting the beauty, tension, and unexpected harmony that arise from human-AI collaboration.

National premiere screening of the short film.

HOME, the entwined vision and collaboration of Adam Larsen (filmmaker) and Sue Schroeder (dancemaker), exists within a metaphorical context, connecting the foundations of human existence—home, the body and nature—as inextricably linked, and acts as a record of a search for truth and the native beauty of reality. Using the architectural constructs of a home to inspire and awaken context, our relationship to the earth and one another are experienced viscerally through the integration of film, architecture and the moving body. Illustrated as a large arc, our story stretches between finding and losing oneself, reflections on the places we call "home," with an emphasis on nature in human nature.

Following the premiere screening of HOME, a live performance will be presented adjacent to the screening. A series of performance vignettes nestled within the Sala delle Grotte at Fortezza da Basso, the performance brings the experience of nature inside, magnifying moments experienced in brief within the film itself. Each vignette exists as a living installation—bringing to life the essence, images, objects and human beings within the film, HOME.

Questo workshop educativo si basa su una metodologia immersiva e interattiva, in cui i bambini sono protagonisti attivi del processo di apprendimento. La fusione tra arte e gioco permette loro di esprimere emozioni e pensieri in modo spontaneo e creativo. L’arte contemporanea, con la sua varietà di linguaggi e mezzi espressivi, diventa un terreno fertile per esplorare l’espressione di sé e la relazione tra individuo e ambiente. L’elemento centrale è l’uso della luce artificiale come strumento di definizione degli spazi e creazione di scenari. In questo contesto, i bambini diventano "esploratori dell’immaginario", trasformando lo spazio con la luce e la materia, acquisendo così fiducia in se stessi e nelle loro capacità creative.

In occasione della XV Florence Biennale, il regista e artista celebre americano Tim Burton riceverà il Premio "Lorenzo il Magnifico" alla Carriera, in riconoscimento del suo eccezionale contributo all'arte visiva.

La cerimonia di premiazione si svolgerà alla presenza dell'artista, nell'ambito di un evento speciale.

Discussione con artisti e designer partecipanti sul tema della mostra "The Sublime Essence of Light and Darkness. Concepts of Dualism and Unity in Contemporary Art and Design."

Presentazione del Catalogo della Mostra (Editoriale Giorgio Mondadori), a cura di Giovanni Cordoni e Jacopo Celona, insieme a Carlo Motta, responsabile del settore libri di Editoriale Giorgio Mondadori.

Luce e oscurità sono l'essenza stessa dell'arte di Rembrandt. Con questi elementi, più di ogni altro artista, seppe catturare l'espressione umana. In un primo momento fu ammirato per la verità e l'onestà dei suoi dipinti. Purtroppo, con l'aumento della ricchezza della società, cambiarono anche i gusti. I suoi committenti iniziarono ad aspettarsi ritratti che li lusingassero e li rendessero più "belli," ma Rembrandt continuò a dipingere la realtà così come la vedeva. Questa fedeltà incrollabile alla verità gli costò cara: fu abbandonato dai suoi mecenati, costretto a dichiarare bancarotta, a vendere la sua casa e la sua collezione d'arte. Finì nullatenente, tanto povero da dover vendere la tomba della sua amata moglie Saskia per sopravvivere. Come ultima umiliazione, il suo capolavoro La congiura dei Batavi fu rifutato. Per poterlo vendere, fu costretto a tagliarlo in più partiu. Gregorio Luke ci condurrà nel mondo di questo genio tragico, facendo luce sulla sua vita tormentata e sulla sua arte straordinaria.

In occasione della XV Florence Biennale, la designer e architetto Patricia Urquiola riceverà il Premio Internazionale “Leonardo da Vinci” alla Carriera per il Design, in riconoscimento del suo eccezionale contributo al design contemporaneo.

La cerimonia di premiazione si svolgerà alla presenza della designer, nell’ambito di un evento speciale.

Il documentario Near Light di Niccolò Salvato (UK, 2023) sarà proiettato per la prima volta a Firenze in occasione della XV Florence Biennale.

Il documentario è incentrato su Mattia, un giovane condannato per omicidio, che dopo aver trascorso 7 anni e mezzo in una delle prigioni di massima sicurezza d'Europa, ha una possibilità di riscatto quando gli viene concesso di frequentare in presenza le lezioni per un corso di laurea magistrale in Marketing presso l'Università Bocconi, la migliore scuola italiana d'economia.

Selezionato del Comitato curatoriale della Florence Biennale per la sua capacità di far riflettere su temi molto delicati, quale la rieducazione dei detenuti e il loro reinserimento in società, e per la sua aderenza al tema della XV edizione, che nell'affrontare i dualismi (come il bene e il male) pone l'accento sulla necessità di una visione d'insieme e di elevarsi verso gli ideali più alti, Near Light mostra un percorso che vede volgere il male in bene e la disperazione in speranza.

Il film Tango en Penumbra (Tango in penombra) della dottoressa Teresa Mular (Argentina, 2024) sarà proiettato in première nazionale durante la XV Florence Biennale.

In questo film, Teresa ci accompagna in un viaggio nella vita di un chimico di 74 anni che, all'età di 28 anni, ha tragicamente perso la vista, presumibilmente a causa di uno scherzo andato male a una festa post-laurea. Dopo decenni di vita nell'oscurità, un tentativo di tango diventa un raggio di luce che illumina il suo mondo in modi che non avrebbe mai immaginato. Il suo fascino per i movimenti e la musica del tango è appassionato e ammaliante. Ogni passo gli porta gioia e speranza, riempiendolo di nuova fiducia e rispetto per se stesso e di un senso di autostima.

Riflettendo sul tema della XV Florence Biennale, Teresa utilizza il suo caratteristico approccio narrativo per esplorare la dicotomia tra luce e oscurità, seguita dal dualismo tra visibile e invisibile. In questo modo, sfida l'idea che la vista sia l'unica via per sperimentare la bellezza o per raggiungere la realizzazione fisica e spirituale.

Il film Die Höhenluft - für Alle und Keinen (L'aria pura di montagna — Per tutti e per nessuno) di Mika'Ela Fisher (Germania, 2023) sarà proiettato in anteprima nazionale alla XV Florence Biennale.

Con ampi riferimenti all'opera Così parlò Zarathustra di Nietzsche, il film è incentrato su due caratteri opposti (i loro nomi, Angra e Spenta, provengono dalla teologia zoroastriana e caratterizzano il dualismo cosmogonico) che rappresentano due facce della stessa medaglia. Dalla cima di una montagna, Angra e Spenta osservano gli umani sottostanti, ignari bersagli di un loro gioco malato, e tirano i fili di queste povere marionette, combattuti tra il bene e il male. Die Höhenluft - für Alle und Keinen è un film curioso, caratterizzato da un certo umorismo cinico, che mette in discussione il nostro libero arbitrio e che rappresenta anche una riflessione “sull'essere umano; che vedo come lacerato, manipolabile, ma comunque responsabile delle sue azioni e decisioni”, come ha affermato la regista.

Dr. Irene Sanesi will guide participants through an overview of the most widespread and innovative practices, offering concrete tools for developing effective fundraising strategies. The talk will also cover an analysis of the main fundraising sources available, along with best practices for buidling a long-term relationship with patrons, institutions, and collectors within the contemporary art system.

David Alfaro Siqueiros is a master of duality. He was a soldier and an artist. He fought in the Mexican Revolution and the Spanish Civil War and painted powerful murals. He was a dogmatic Stalinist, who tried to assassinate Leon Trotsky, and at the same time an innovative artist, who pioneered new materials, photography in art and a dramatic use perspective. Inspired by Italian futurists, his paintings appear to move as we move in front of them or seem to come out of their frames and reach us. Siqueiros was imprisoned and exiled for his political ideals, but he is also a major influence in contemporary art, from Abstract Expressionism, to Pop and Chicano art. Because of his controversial politics, Siqueiros has never received the recognition he deserves. This lecture by Gregorio Luke will shed light on the many things young artists today can learn from Siqueiros.

Alejandra Castro Rioseco — prominent art collector as well as Founder and Executive Director of MIA ART COLLECTION — will deliver a special talk titled Women Artists Between Light and Darkness. In this presentation, she will share personal insights and discoveries from a lifetime engaging with works by women artists — many of whom have long remained in the shadows of art history. From forgotten pioneers to rising contemporary voices, this conversation explores how women have created powerful work in the margins, and how collectors, curators, and institutions are now rethinking their place in the spotlight. A rare glimpse into the intersection of passion, advocacy, and an evolving art market.

Durante ogni edizione della Florence Biennale, gli artisti e i designer partecipanti che si distinguono per le loro opere in concorso nelle rispettive categorie ricevono i premi “Lorenzo il Magnifico” (per l’Arte) e “Leonardo da Vinci” (per il Design), assegnati dalla Guria Internazionale composta da eminenti personalità del mondo dell’arte e della cultura. Questo momento solenne celebra l’eccellenza, la creatività e la cultura contemporanea, alla presenza di rappresentanti istituzionali, della Giuria Internazionale e degli ospiti invitati.

La XV Florence Biennale si concluderà con la cerimonia ufficiale di chiusura.
