Exploration of works on paper by five Florentine Artists
Five Florentine artists explore books in various forms of works on paper: from October 20th to November 7th 2014 the Italian Culture Institute in La Valletta will hold PAPER REINCARNATIONS, collective exhibition curated by Lilia Lamas and organized by the Florence Biennale, in occasion of the XIV Week of Italian Language in the World.
Nilo Australi, Paolo Carandini, Diego Gabriele, Andrea Granchi and Gianna Scoino are five artists who live and work in Florence, three generations come together experimenting with new techniques of use of paper and artist’s book, in search of new ways of interpreting this ancient but timeless material, highlighted in a dance of memory.
The project was born from the cooperation between Associazione per il Commercio Italo Maltese (Italian-Maltese Chamber of Commerce Association) based in Florence, Antonio Pangallo, Secretary and Jacopo Celona, Director of the Florence Biennale of Contemporary Art. PAPER REINCARNATIONS explores the universe of paper and books, consistent with the theme of the XIV Week of Italian Language in the World.
Approximately thirty artworks will be exhibited in the Italian Cultural Institute, including artist’s books, ancient letters turned into sculptures, old texts revisited in a contemporary way and works inspired by paper and literature. At least six artworks each author, a team of five who can depict the conceptual work of three different generations of contemporary artists based in Florence.
Andrea Granchi and Gianna Scoino, former professors of the Accademia di Belle Arti of Florence and renowned artists with a rich biography in national and international exhibitions. Paolo Carandini, Florentine artist who has worked in antique book conservation and binding, uses the gained knowledge to make “Boxes of the Wonders”, sort of time capsules with memories of a lived lives and stories from well-known books inside them. Last but not least, Nilo Australi and Diego Gabriele, two emerging young artists who experiment new techniques using paper and books, looking for new ways to interpret this ancient but always present-day material.
Following Malta, PAPER REINCARNATIONS collective will be exhibited in Florence from 30th April 2015, at LINEA Spazio Arte Contemporanea, Florence Biennale headquarters in Via Delle Porte Nuove, 10 (close to the city center of Florence).
