The outstanding contribution to the Visual and Performing Arts

The Florence Biennale has awarded the "Lorenzo il Magnifico" International Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts and Culture to Franco Zeffirelli, in reference to Leonardo's legacy which he, a Florentine by birth, was able to honour by embracing all the arts and uniquely expressing the sense of beauty and harmony of Florentine culture, ranging from film to theatre.

This award was given to him "for his extraordinary contribution to the performing arts, the visual arts and the art of filmmaking, with which he has brought prestige to Florence and enchanted the whole world. Through works of great evocative power, permeated with beauty and harmony, Franco Zeffirelli has marvellously achieved a synthesis between the arts, distinguishing himself as the creator of an art without limits. All this by masterfully reinterpreting Leonardo da Vinci's legacy, which belongs to his culture of origin, and by involving exceptional talents on the international scene in the genius of his sublime creative process".
