During his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design of Arnhem in 1979, Wessel Huisman studied History at the Radboud University of Nijmegen. In 1981 he graduated with honors in social and economic history. Furthermore, he specialized in philosophy, philology and empirical sociology. Although he has never worked as a researcher, his artistic activity reveals an intriguing and unique interest in history. His works reflect on time and historical development: these are a sort of “journey of the mind in time” not only for the study of the past but also of the present. Wessel Huisman paints the light. As a starting point, he often uses old black and white photographs. He is not interested in nostalgic images as such, but is fascinated by the functioning of memories and how they influence the way in which the present is experienced.
