2009 Biennale Recognitions

The seventh edition of the Biennale Internazionale dell’Arte Contemporanea of Florence will be held from 5th to 13th December 2009 in the historical setting of Fortezza da Basso. Participants and guest will ahve the chance to meet within the many conferences and events, our Honour guests:

800 artists from 80 countries will exhibit more than 2,500 works of art and will take part in the exhibition for an extraordinary encounter between different cultures, styles and languages as the “Dialogue among Civilization” program promotes, the Biennale has been officially participating in this program since 2001.

2007 Biennale Recognitions

An award to Gilbert & George

On the successful wave of their exhibition at the Tate Gallery in London, Gilbert & George will come to Florence together with Tim Marlow, exhibitions director of the White Cube Gallery London, founder of the Tate Magazine, collaborator on Channel Five, where he presents a program on current exhibitions. Tim Marlow has published several books and important artists monographs such as Auguste Rodin and Egon Schiele. He writes for various magazines and newspapers such as The Times, The Guardian, The Independent on Sunday, Art Monthly, etc.

2005 Biennale Recognitions

An award to Chirsto & Jeanne-Claude

The artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, have taken part in the International Biennale of Contemporary Art of Florence. They were awarded with “Lorenzo Il Magnifico” award by the President of the Biennale, Pasquale Celona. After that they offered a lecture illustrating several projects of their career.

An award to Richard Anuszkiewicz

The artist Richard Anuszkiewicz, exhibited his works at the fifth edition of the Florence Biennale. During the conference the artist went through the most important areas of his career, illustrating the techniques that he adopted in the creation of his works through images projected on a large screen. On this occasion the President of the Biennale, Pasquale Celona, awarded the inventor of Optical Art, Richard Anuszkiewicz, the "Lorenzo il Magnifico" Award for his career.

A homage to Harley-Davidson

The utmost recognition of the Biennale, that consists in the presentation of the prestigious award "Lorenzo il Magnifico", officially ratifies the multiform genius and diffused commitment in the field of Motorcycling, aimed at the Men of Harley-Davidson, for constant development in technology in one of the most modern expressions of life.

2003 Biennale Recognitions

A homage to the Restoration Laboratories of the Vatican Museums

The highest possible recognition of the Biennale, consisting in the presentation of the prestigious award "Lorenzo il Magnifico" and that ratifies the authoritarian and precious commitment diffused in the field of art, time and space has been awarded this year to the Restoration Laboratories of the Vatican Museums for their unique and constant recovery work to one of the most important heritages of mankind.

A homage to Ferrari

The fourth edition of the Biennale pays homage to Ferrari, a symbol of Italian creativeness and talent throughout the world, with recognition of the "Lorenzo il Magnifico" award. Among paintings, sculptures and installations of the 2003 edition, some works of art from the past and present were also presented of the historical car manufacturer from Maranello, such as the 125 S, the first Ferrari car (1947): the 250 LM, the first vehicle with rear engine that marked an era (1963): the famous super-car F40 (1987); the Enzo Ferrari , the last super-car, produced in just 399 models (2002).

An award to David Hockney

David Hockney, one of the most famous contemporary artists took part in the fourth edition of the Biennale, where he was given the "Lorenzo il Magnifico" award for his career, with a conference during the exhibition on the “optical instruments of renaissance artists”, a topic that has been studied in detail for many years by the artist, fascinated by the techniques used to create the most important works of art of ancient maestros.

A homage to Alfredo Zalce (1908 - 2003)

The Biennale has given homage to the last of the Mexican Muralist, dedicating a special space and the career award "Lorenzo il Magnifico".

The Biennale pays homage to Marta Marzotto, the godmother of the exhibition.

1999 Biennale Recognitions

A homage to the poet and art critic Mario Luzi

The second Edition of the Biennale pays homage to the Poet and art Critic Mario Luzi, with the award for Career "Lorenzo il Magnifico". During the exhibition the Maestro presented his book "Luzi Critico d'Arte".

1997 Biennale Recognitions

Award for the Career to Ferruccio Soleri and Carla Fracci

During the first Edition of the Contemporary Art Biennale of Florence the awards for career "Lorenzo il Magnifico" were presented to the theatre artist Ferruccio Soleri, a famous Harlequin of the Piccolo theatre in Milan and to Carla Fraccia ballerina of the Scala Theatre in Milan and an artist of Italian dance. During the same event, the “Lorenzo Il Magnifico” award of the City of Florence was given to Dolores Puthod, an artist and set designer of the Scala Theatre of Milan.
