Biennale 1997

A review of Art in Florence is an event that sounds familiar and does not provoke more than a natural reaction and normal attention to it In a city context that owe to the Culture and to the Art its main reason of being. Nevertheless, an International Review of Contemporary Art as a biennial in Florence, city to which all people makes reference in the construction of the personal cultural baggage, is something else and it has istinctively and immediately a sincere and alive interest.
An event of such an importance, over all the discussions on this field in Florence in the last years, over all the monographies of valid artists, it is without doubt an important moment for the universal art, not only because it offers a huge exhibition space to famous or less famous artists, also because it helps the dialogue with the public and confronts different experiences and results.
The Biennale Internazionale dell’Arte Contemporanea starts in order to answer the always bigger desire for art that pursues a bigger number of people to program visits to the most important Museums of Contemporarty Art in the world.

The fear that in a city strongly tied to the past, that hides history and civilization, could not see the birth of a biennial of contemporary art, has been refuted from the first edition of the Biennial, that it has seen the participation of more than 300 artists, coming from from 17 countries, and the grown interest from an international public.
Numerous important people have been hosts of the exhibition; Carla Fracci as godmother of the first edition of the Biennial, The President Pasquale Celona gave homage to her (see photo), with the prize "Lorenzo il Magnifico" the City of Florence. Other illustrious hosts have been Dolores Puthod and Ferruccio Soleri which have received the prizes "Lorenzo il Magnifico " for the Career.
