José Luis Cuevas

International Award “Lorenzo il Magnifico” for Lifetime Achievement 2011

The Florence Biennale presented the prestigious Award “Lorenzo il Magnifico” for Lifetime Achievement to maestro José Luis Cuevas, one of the greatest Mexican artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, a rebel and leader with a great capacity for critical dialogue. He is one of the most important members of the movement “Ruptura”, noted for distancing itself from Mexican muralism and for its critical appraisal of the Mexican school of painting.

He has achieved international recognition for his exceptional aesthetics, and as a member of the movement Ruptura he helped breath new life into contemporary art in Mexico. His works are characterized by an ideal of artistic freedom; an aesthetic quality that promotes both expression and figurative work, which can, in turn, reflect the past and current human condition.
