Anish Kapoor at the Florence Biennale 2013

As part of the IX Florence Biennale, the “Lorenzo il Magnifico” for Lifetime Achievement Award in the Arts went to Anish Kapoor, for the high example of independence from ideologies and given frameworks. The award recognized his great talents, especially in the construction of site-specific projects that fascinate today’s communities and patrons by re-using Renaissance themes.

The award ceremony took place in the historic Salone dei Cinquecento at Palazzo Vecchio, and afterwards the artist visited the exhibits of the IX Florence Biennale. His presence was a unique and exciting event for visitors, but especially for other artists, who had the chance to meet him in person and to talk to a widely admired and appreciated artist.

Aesthetic and conceptual approach in monumental works

An eclectic and multicultural artist, Kapoor has made extraordinary contributions to the definition of a new paradigm for contemporary art. His monumental works are as renowned as they are fascinating due to their conceptual and aesthetic characteristics. Some of his most famous art pieces are the Sky Mirrors, the Could Gate at Chicago’s Millennium Park, and the Tall Tree and the Eye at the Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao, all of which combine both an aesthetic and a conceptual approach.

These works represent a continually changing space-time and by reflecting positive cosmic energy they diminish the barriers between the visible and the invisible. Anish Kapoor’s work offered an excellent interpretation of the IX Florence Biennale’s theme, Ethics: Art’s DNA, which focused on the pairing of ethics and aesthetics in art.
